What Every HR Leader Should Know

Pharmacy costs continue to be a significant pressure point for employers, and the landscape is evolving quickly. This session gives HR leaders a clear, practical view of the forces driving today’s rising drug spend, including GLP-1 utilization, biosimilars, evolving PBM pricing models, market disruptors, and shifting federal and state regulations. The focus is on cutting through the noise to understand what’s real and what matters most when making benefit decisions for their people and their plans.

Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of the key trends shaping pharmacy spend, the impact of emerging therapies and PBM models, and practical steps HR leaders can take to better manage costs while supporting member access and outcomes.

Sarah van Vuuren

Pharmacy Relations Strategist

Brown & Brown

Sarah serves as a Strategist for the Brown & Brown National Pharmacy Team, supporting offices across the organization as a pharmacy consulting specialist. In her role, she leads pharmacy benefit education internally and externally, facilitates conversations around pharmacy market dynamics and trends, and brings deep insight into the PBM landscape. She also supports RFP activity, client meetings, and pharmacy program reviews, helping guide best fit solutions for client opportunities.

With nearly 20 years in the pharmacy field, Sarah’s background spans the full spectrum of the industry. She began her career as a pharmacy technician in hospital and retail settings, then spent several years with Target Corporation supporting retail pharmacy operations. From there, she moved into pharmacy benefits consulting with The Burchfield Group, an Aon Company, working with employers, public entities, and unions. She later served as an Associate Director at OptumRx, managing their largest Labor and Trust client, and most recently worked with the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company as a Client Service Manager. Sarah joined Brown & Brown in January 2025.
